In 1900 he and his parents, five of his siblings (all except Melvin), and a cousin, 18-year-old Viola Phillips (his mother's sister Amanda's daughter), lived on a farm they owned, mortgage free, in Pike Township, Coshocton County, OH.

In 1920 he and Ella and their son lived there.

He worked as the operator of his own place (the farm), with an income in 1940 of $240 for 52 weeks of work, and Orval worked as a tool dresser in an oil field, with an income in 1939 of $800 for 40 weeks of work.
