Jedediah Preble, Jr., the eldest son of the Brigadier-General by his first marriage to Martha Junkins was born at York, Maine, in 1734. He married Avis Phillips, of Boston, in 1761 or 1762, and died in 1782 or 1783. His death was caused by the breaking of his leg, and subsequent exposure, from his shipwreck upon Seal Island, off the Coast of Maine.

The remainder of the shipwrecked people having repaired the boat (its bows having been stove in ), in the best manner they could with a bearskin, which had drifted on shore from the wreck, succeeded on the afternoon of his death in reaching the main land.
