Before the Civil War, he captained a militia unit in the Newberry Township area. WIth the onset of war, he enlisted at the stated age of forty-four in Harrisburg September 9, 1861, and mustered into federal service in York September 14 as a private with Co. B, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. Soon elected to 1st lieutenant and commissioned to that rank, he became one of the regiment's most respected drill instructors. Due to illness, he resigned his commission effective May 26, 1863, and honorably discharged.
After the war, he moved to Harrisburg, Dauphin County. No obituary was found in any online newspaper archive.
