Died at Mount Saint Francis Nursing Center, Colorado Springs, CO. LaVerna Anna Braun was the 7th of 14 children. Born to William P. Braun and Barbara German in Humphrey, Nebraska on October 20, 1913. At age 19 she joined the Franciscan Community in Lafayette IN and took the name Barbara Ann in memory of her little sister who had died 2 years earlier at age 3 months. On the night of her little sister's death she told her parents that she not only wanted to be a nurse; she wanted to be a Sister. In 2009 she celebrated her 75th Jubilee as a Franciscan Sister. Sister Barbara Ann graduated from Saint Elizabeth School of Nursing in Lafayette Indiana in 1939. She earned her BSN in Nursing Education from St. Louis University in 1951 and her Masters Degree in Nursing Administration from the Catholic University of America in 1963. She was a member of Kappa Chapter Sigma Theta Tau, Inc., the National Honor Society of Nursing. In 1977 she received her certification as a hospital chaplain. In Service to Others: For more than 20 years she served in various maternity and pediatric nursing and administrative positions in Denver, Grand Island and Lincoln. In 1965 Sister Barbara Ann was elected Provincial of the Colorado Springs Province of her Franciscan community and served in this capacity until 1971. She was an active member of the National Conference of Major Superiors of Women and a founding member of the Franciscan Federation, Third Order Regular of the U.S. Her Work at Saint Elizabeth: She then moved to Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln, NE where she established the Pastoral Care Department and served as its director for more than 20 years. Many people described Sister Barbara Ann as the spirit of Saint Elizabeth. She embodied the mission of healing and compassion every day. Sister served on many of the boards of our hospitals, was a member of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, of the Lincoln Axis Business and Professional Women's Club, Lincoln Police and Fire Chaplaincy Corps, Board member of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, member of Lincoln Right to Life, Co-founder of Birthright, active with Saint Elizabeth Auxiliary, Co-founder and spiritual advisor to Theos (a self-help group for widows and widowers), founding member and facilitator for "Make Today Count" (Support Group for seriously ill persons). She was also instrumental in preserving the original Saint Elizabeth Hospital Chapel as a historical site and establishing the first Parish Nurse Training Program in Nebraska at Saint Elizabeth. She assisted in the creation of Fresh Start Home in Lincoln to provide a safe healing environment for homeless single women and was selected as Woman of Achievement by the Professional Women's Club of Lincoln. Sister enjoyed life and was an enthusiastic Nebraska football fan. Retirement: In 2003, Sister retired to the Mount Saint Francis Motherhouse in Colorado Springs where she continued her life of caring service in her daily visits to the residents at Mount St. Francis Nursing Center. In the same year she was chosen by the Sisters to receive the Reconciler Award from the Franciscan Federation for her contemplative commitment and dedicated action as an instrument of God's peace. She is survived by two brothers, William and Richard of Omaha, NE; two sisters, Flora Mae Suing of Omaha and Dorothy Perry of Pleasantville, NY; and over 30 nieces and nephews including Sister Mary Braun, CSJ. Her brothers Eugene and Ray, and sisters Chrissie, Leona, Stella, Lucille, Barbara Ann, Irene, and an infant preceded her in death.
Services: The wake service for Sister Barbara Ann will be held at 5:15 pm on Friday, January 21st in Canticle Chapel at Mount St. Francis in Colorado Springs, CO. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Saturday, January 22 in St. Francis of Assisi Parish Church with burial in the Mount Saint Francis Cemetery. Memorials may be made to either:(1) the Sisters of Saint Francis, 7665 Assisi Heights, Colorado Springs, CO 80919; or (2) the Saint Elizabeth Foundation, 555 S 70th Street, Lincoln, NE 68510, for either the Chapel Renovation Fund or the Patient Hardship Fund.
