William was the third child of Isaac Oliver (1784-1873) and his second wife Mary "Polly" Downey Tucker (1800-1880). William first married Susan Walton (abt 1840-abt 1872) from which they had one known child. Following the death of Susan, he married Levonia Pierce (1846-1932) from which they had five known children.

William enlisted in the Union Missouri Volunteers at St. Charles, Missouri in Dec 1864, assigned duties near Raleigh, NC during the spring of 1865, later being transferred to Company I, 6th Missouri Infantry. It does not appear he served throughout the long history of this regiment which was involved in many battles and suffered many losses. His muster out date is not known. He filed for a pension in March 1886 (cert. 432401). Then following his death in March 1903 his widow filed for pension in Sept 1903 (cert. 588604).

William was an active member of the Oakland Christian Church, and although not stated in his obituary we can safely assume he was buried there.

William's death date was researched but never confirmed. With the availability of newspapers now online, his records are better defined. We found he wrote and signed the obituary for his sister Ann H. (Oliver) Brown in Nov 1900. We then found articles of probate in 1903, and later his obituary in the Columbia Herald-Statesman, stating he died Monday 16 March 1903. This coincides with his son J.A. Oliver filing probate in March 1903 and his wife's filing for pension in Sept 1903. There are also many miscellaneous records in the 1900-1903 range confirming he was living in the Columbia and surrounding areas of Missouri.
