Last rites were conducted on Monday, October 28th at the May City church by Rev. Boye of Ocheyedan for Peter Boernsen.
He was born on the 5th day of March 1859, in Thumby, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. His childhood and youth were spent in Germany. at the age of 25 years, on the 10th day of May, 1884, he was united in holy wedlock with Christina Jessen of Struxdorf, Angeln, Germany. After their marriage in 1884, Mr. and Mrs. Boernsen left the land of their birth and came to America. Arriving in this country, they located in Benton County, Iowa, later moving to Plymouth County. During the year 1895 they moved to Osceola County where they were actively engaged in farm work for many years.
Twenty-six years ago, on the 21st day of October 1920, Mrs. Boernsen was taken from his side by death.
After the death of his wife, the now departed continued in farm work until 1932. From 1932 to 1944, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Jake berends and family. Since July 1944, he made his home with his son, William and family.
The deceased was not only a faithful member of our St. John's congregation, but also one of its founders. Unlike so many young men and women who forget their early training in the wild scramble for pleasures of this passing world, he remained faithful to his baptismal and confirmation vow. He was one of the rare instances of men who have lived a life of faith and godliness in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, he continued by the grace of God, as far as man can judge, in that narrow path that leads to heaven and eternal glory for more than fourscore years. As in many other ways, he also experienced the blessing of God in this very important one, that all his children and grandchildren are faithful members of the church today.
After having been in failing health for several years, Father Boernsen became bedfast about four months ago. During his entire sickness he was given the best of care by his son and daughter in law, who administered to his needs and comfort with untiring efforts and self-sacrificing devotion. After lingering between life and death for many months, he peacefully fell asleep on Friday afternoon, October 25 at four o'clock in the afternoon, thus reaching the age of 87 years, 7 months and 20 days.
The departed leaves to mourn him his five children: John, Henry, Minnie (Mrs. Berends) and Dora (Mrs. Brockshus). He also leaves a brother, Fred, of Niagara, NY and five brothers and one sister in Germany, 16 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren besides his wife, two children preceded him to eternity.
