Elizabeth's daughter Ada was born to Lizzie Stingley and George Shell Jr. in 1811. It is uncertain how many children were fathered by George Shell Jr. Local historian Ollie Idleman said Elizabeth Stingley was the mother of five children; Ms. Idleman thought they were as follows: Thomas Stingley (born in 1806 and not Shell's son), Mary (Shell) Harris, George Washington Schell, Ada (Shell) Lewis, and Chlora (Shell) George. There is circumstantial evidence that George and Lizzie's relationship may have lasted beyond George's legal marriage to Elizabeth (Betsy) Harris in ca. 1819. Chlora, wife of Joseph George, was born ca. 1819-21 and is considered a daughter of Lizzie Stingley and George Shell. Chlora's children, Ann Rebecca and Frances Catharine, received bequests from George Shell's will. Also, Lizzie Stingley lived in the home of Chlora's widower, Joseph George, following Chlora's death in 1847. George Shell may be buried in the Ferdinand Lewis cemetery, but if so there is no headstone for him.
Several web sites have confused Elizabeth Stingley with Elizabeth (Harris) Shell. Both women had a relationship with George Shell Jr. The Elizabeth Shell buried at Lahmansville cemetery, Grant County, however, is Elizabeth (Harris) Shell and not Elizabeth Stingley.
