William A. Baker died at the home of his son, W.A. Jr., at Holdrege, NE, Monday, September 1, 1897, where he went for treatment about two weeks previous to his death. He had been a great sufferer for the past six months, the real cause of which was not known until he went to Holdrege where upon examining his case the physician in charge pronounced it cancer of the stomach, and his case hopeless.

The funeral services were conducted under the auspices of the G.A.R. The remains were escorted to the morning train of the B. & M.R.R. by the Holdrege camp.
