Funeral services were held Saturday (28 Oct 1961) afternoon in the Bladen Methodist church for John L. Baker, who passed away on Wednesday 25th at the Veterans Hospital in Lincoln after several weeks' illness at the age of 80 years, 11 months and 26 days. Rev. M. Dale Tulloch officiated and pallbearers were Harry Oberg, Wm. Van Kirk, Lloyd Englehardt, Wm. Hoffman, Howard James and Wallace Koch. Other Masons also attended in a group. Interment was in the family lot in Cloverton cemetery.

John Louis Baker was born to William and Susan Baker on October 29, 1871, at Fort Madison, Iowa. He came to Nebraska with his parents in 1887 to the Bladen community, which has since been his home. He attended grade school at the Prairie Gem School near Bladen.

Mr. Baker farmed in the Bladen community and also assisted his parents in the operation of a hotel and livery stable in the early days. He also served as a mechanic for a number of years. He served in the United States Army as a mechanic from September 6, 1918 until April 15, 1919. He was the proud owner of the first automobile in Webster County.

He was a charter member of the Bladen Masonic Lodge and served it faithfully until the end.

John, being the last member of his family to depart this life, leaves three nephews and three nieces to morn his departing.

Relatives from out of town attending the services were Dr. and Mrs. Wm. Baker, Carol and John of Hebron, Mr. & Mrs. William A. Baker of Scottsbluff, Mrs. Alfred Kottmeyer and Charlotte of Superior, Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Toepfer and Karyn and Joanne Karnes of Blue Hill and Mrs. Merta Osgood of Hastings.
