Silas Minshall was born to Mary Ann & George Henry Minshall, the second son and fourth child of ten children. He was born in Sugar Creek, Walworth County, Wisconsin. He worked as a farm laborer on the Wiswell Farm in Elkhorn in his early 20s. He lived with his family until his mother, Mary Ann, died in 1920. He then moved to the Southern Wisconsin Colony & Training Center, an institution for the developmentally disabled, in Racine, Wisconsin. He lived and worked there as a farm hand. He also served as a Deputy Sheriff for Darien and was appointed in 1927. He died at the age of 55 in 1933, he never married. He was beloved by his family and was a kind and gentle soul.
