Elvina "Elva" Minshall was the youngest of 10 children born to George Henry & Mary Ann Minshall. She grew up in Sugar Creek, Walworth County, Wisconsin. After graduating from high school she moved to Chicago, Illinois and attended nursing school at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago. After graduating from nursing school she worked for about a year at the Presbyterian Hospital. While working there she met and became life-long friends with Ina Kingery, another nursing student. After finishing nursing school, Ina and Elva moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where they both found jobs at the new hospital. They also lived and worked in St. Louis, Missouri for about two years before eventually moving to San Diego, California. There, Elva helped care for her older sister, Hannah Rebecca Minshall Harrington, who had suffered a severe stroke. Her sister Hannah Rebecca was living with her niece, Florence Minshall Harrison in La Jolla, California. Elva also became head nurse at Balboa Hospital in San Diego. Her dear friend and companion, Ina Kingery passed away in 1950 and Elva Minshall passed away a few years later on November 19, 1953. Elvina Priscilla Minshall was 63 years old. Ina & Elva were the most kind, loving and wonderful women as well as excellent nurses.
