Melvin Gibbs was the second of ten children of Joel Gibbs and Elizabeth Root of Benson, Rutland County, Vermont. In 1835 he married Mary E. Benson in Bath, Steuben County, New York.
Melvin Gibbs and Mary Benson had the following children:
1) Mary E. Gibbs (1833-1883), who was the second wife of Harvey H. Morse. After his death she married James A. Grant;
2) Carrie Gibbs (about 1835-died young);
3) Marvin B. Gibbs (1839-1893), who married Marguret Jane Delling. After Marvin's death Marguret married Alonzo "Lon" Richards;
4) Almira Ione "Myra" Gibbs (1842-1913), who married William Wallace Delling;
5) Son Gibbs (1845-1845)
Mary (Benson) Gibbs died on December 27, 1845 as a result of complications in childbirth when her son was born in February of the same year. She is buried in Meeks Cemetery, Howard Township, Steuben County, New York.
Melvin Gibbs's second wife was Clarissa Crowell. Clarissa Crowell was a young teacher who stayed with the Melvin Gibbs family during Mary Benson Gibbs's illness. Her family lived nearby the Melvin Gibbs family in Howard Township, Steuben County, New York. Before her death, Mary Benson Gibbs suggested to her husband Melvin that he marry Clarissa so she could help care for their children. Melvin and Clarissa married and moved to Indianfields Township, Tuscola County, Michigan in about 1852. They had the following children:
1) Elias S. Gibbs (1846-1915), who married Mary E. Peck.
2) Alice Gibbs (1854-1927), who married Nehemiah Bonker.
3) Clara Ellen Gibbs (1857-1918), who married Theron W. Atwood.
4) Thomas O. Gibbs (1861-1916), who married Cora Morrell Smith.

Death of Melvin Gibbs
Died at his residence on Almer Street, last Friday night, Mr. Melvin Gibbs, aged 78 years 8 months and 11 days. He leaves an aged companion and seven children and other relatives to mourn his loss. He had been afflicted with asthma, and at an early age had the misfortune to rupture himself badly, which causes, no doubt led to his death. The sorrowing relatives have our deepest sympathy in this the hour of their affliction.
Mr. Gibbs was one of the oldest pioneers of this county and especially of this near vicinity and was prominently connected with the county for many years and in many ways.
He was born in the state of Vermont, moved to New York, and in the year of 1857 [1852] moved to this place and settled on land purchased of the late S.P. Sherman, part of which land is now embraced in the corporative limits. He soon after erected the frame hotel which is situated on the corner of Almer and Frank Streets where he catered with good results to the traveling public. If we are not mistaken this was the first hotel Centerville (now Caro) had, and is now occupied by Wm. N. West as a family residence.
Mr. Gibbs was a supervisor for a term of six years for the township of Indianfields before the township of Wells and Kingston were set off from Indianfields. He was a prominent factor in the county seat controversy, and aided in removing the county seat from Vassar to Caro. Mr. Gibbs always had the respect of those who knew him and his death tells of a life completely finished.
He had been married twice, his first wife dying in the year 1849 [1845], leaving four children of whom one has since died. He had four children by his second wife all of whom with their mother still survive him.
