Before her death, Mary (Benson) Gibbs suggested to her husband Melvin that he marry Clarissa so she could help care for their children.
Melvin and Clarissa married and moved to Indianfields Township, Tuscola County, Michigan in about 1852. They had the following children:
1) Elias S. Gibbs (1846-1915), who married Mary E. Peck.
2) Alice Gibbs (1854-1927), who married Nehemiah Bonker.
3) Clara Ellen Gibbs (1857-1918), who married Theron W. Atwood.
4) Thomas O. Gibbs (1861-1916), who married Cora Morrell Smith.
Obituary:
Mrs. Clarissa Gibbs, widow of Melvin B. Gibbs, died at Caro, July 27, 1895, aged 72 years. She was born in Steuben County, N. Y., and had been a resident of the county 40 years.
