GEORGE W. TALBOTT
With deep regret we chronicle the death of Mr. George W. Talbott, one of our most highly esteemed citizens and a Civil War veteran, which occurred at his home in this city on Wednesday, May 28, 1930, at the age of 85 years, 4 months and 14 days. He had been in failing health for some time and death was not unexpected.
George Washington Talbott, son of S. A. and Mary Talbott, was born in Parke county, Indiana, on January 14, 1845. He came with his parents to Iowa at the age of ten and settled in Lucas county.
He enlisted in Company H, 9th Iowa Cavalry, at Chariton, Iowa, October 27, 1863, and was honorably discharged at Little Rock, Arkansas, on February 3, 1866. For a time he carried the mail by stage from Chariton to Indianola.
He was married to Harriett Manhardt Henderson in Mahaska county, January 7, 1875. A short time afterward they located on a farm near Chariton. Two children were born to this union, Johnnie, who died in infancy, and Mrs. Regia Curtis.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter and a step-son, Nate Henderson, and three grandchildren, all of Chariton. He is also survived by four half-brothers. His many friends will greatly miss this loyal citizen and friend. He has joyfully answered the final roll call.
For many years Mr. Talbott has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Friday, May 30th, at 2:30, and the pastor, E. L. Stone, had charge of the services. Burial was made in the Chariton cemetery.
