Joseph Burton Spaulding was the son of Lyman Spaulding and Olive Beach. His paternal grandparents were John Spaulding and Margaret Peterson.

Joseph married Anna Margaret Christianson.

Joseph served in the Spanish America War. He enlisted in 1898, with Company B. Joseph was a bugler. He was employed by the W.D. Hoare, printing company for many years. Joseph and Anna moved to Eau Claire County from Ft. Atkinson in 1903 He purchased a farm near Ojibwa.

In 1910 Joseph and Anna were living in Bridge Creek, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin. Joseph was a printer and Anna was the mother of 5 living children. They were Dorothy, age 16, Margaret age 15, Burton age 7, Jonathan age 4 and Elsie age 2. Burton was born in Illinois and the other children were born in Wisconsin. In 1930 Anna is widowed and living in Eau Claire with her daughter, Clara June and near to her daughter Margaret Krell.

Joseph was buried with full military honors with Veterans of the Spanish American War attending. The Reverend T.D. Whittles of the First Presbyterian Church conducted the funeral service at the Spaulding family home.
