Ira was the son of Lyman Spaulding and Olive Malissa Beach. Ira married Nettie Strickland on 1 October 1882 in Phelps County, Nebraska.

In 1860 and 1870 Ira was living with his family in Koshkonong, Wisconsin. Ira's father, Lyman owned a farm. In 1885 Ira, Nettie and their son were living in Gosper County, Nebraska. Ira was farming. Ira and Nettie then left Nebraska and moved to Colorado, between Julesburg and Wray. Ira was killed in a train accident near Wray.

" An article dated March 25, 1887 in the Jefferson County Union (Wisconsin) reports that Ira was "killed by the cars in Feb. last...near Wray Col." He (Ira Spaulding)and Nettie had moved with their young son Joseph Byron from Gosper County, Nebraska a few years before to "government land in eastern Colorado between Julesburg and Wray." (Ira) disappeared after leaving home with a team of horses to secure provision in Wray. After several weeks, Nettie heard the story of "a man supposed to be a tramp" who was hit and killed by a train near the train station in Wray. The body was exhumed and identified as her husband Ira. According to the article, 'it was supposed that a blizzard coming on, he turned his team loose as is the custom sometimes in such cases, and undertook to reach the station afoot, and while walking on the track, he was struck by an engine and killed."

Nettie then married Levi Karschner. Thry were married on 26 April 1893 in Sterling, Logan County, Colorado. County Judge, George E. McConley performed the ceremony.

The 1900 federal census lists Levi Karschner, married 6 years, a prisoner of the Colorado State Penitentary, born December 1869 in Illinois.

The 1900 federal census lists Nettie and her son living with her mother, Eunice Strickland in Emerson, Harlan County, Nebraska. The census indicates that Nettie is a widow.

Levi Karschner ended his life by suicide in 1904.

"Because of his infatuation for Mrs. J. N. Barden, formerly of this city, Levi Karschner put a bullet through his head, in her rooming house in Denver, Saturday night. Mrs. Harden, who is divorced, left here about a month ago, and Karschner also went to Denver. Saturday night Mrs. Barden attended theater with another man, and this was the final straw that sent Karschner to suicide."
