Blinded in his right eye as a young boy as he watched a pair of scissors being sharpened a cinder flew out and struck him in that eye. He wore a glass eye since then.

Married first to A Marie Esterley LINK (1892-1940), whom he later divorced.
Then married to a fellow Marshalltown, Iowa girl, Fannie Flower.
