Dickey was raised in China, Texas by his aunt and uncle, Latney Leach and Florence Bogan Leach.
At age 17 he was paralyzed from the waist down in a swimming accident, the summer before he was scheduled to attend West Point.

Richard H. "Dicky" Bogan, 72, of China died March 26 at Baptist Hospital in Beaumont.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Broussard's Mortuary in Beaumont with burial at China Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., he lived in China most of his life and was a retired rice farmer and rancher.
Survivors include sisters, Edna Mae Jones of Wichita, Kan., and Lou Ann Basham of Marietta, Ga.
Contributions may be made to Twin County Youth Association in China.
