Charles Willard Burgess was the sixth surviving son of Esther (née Williams) and William B. Burgess. He was a lifelong farmer, owning 105 acres in Montville Township, Geauga County, Ohio.

Charles W. Burgess and Mary C. Haskins were married on 20 June 1851 in Bainbridge Township, Geauga County.
