Burritt Watson Burgess, the son of Mary Cordelia (née Haskins) and Charles Willard Burgess, was born 24 August 1854 in Montville Township, Geauga County, Ohio, where his family farmed. He became a music teacher in Montville, and later Cleveland, Ohio.

B. W. Burgess and Sarah Pantridge were married on 10 May 1879 in Yorksville, Kendall County, Illinois. The groom, age 25 (on next birthday), was a vocal music teacher, born and resident in Montville, Ohio. The bride, age 25 (on next birthday), was a daughter of James Pantridge and Ann Tate; born in Dromore, Ireland, and resident in Cleveland, Ohio. (First marriage for both. Dromore is now in Northern Ireland.) The couple had two children: a daughter and a son (who died in childhood). Sarah died on 13 January 1910 at the age of 54.

Burritt W. Burgess and Elizabeth V. Cook (née Pearcy) were married on 1 October 1910 in Cuyahoga County. She was the widow of William Charles Cook, and the mother of two sons. The couple were enumerated in 1920 in Cleveland. She died from tuberculosis on 13 March 1924 in North Manchester, Indiana (where a son lived); she was 69. He died, probably from stoke, on 15 December 1925 in Cleveland, at the age of 71.
