Mary and her parents came to Young County, Texas from Hill County, Texas in a covered wagon. It took four days to make the trip. They brought two mules, a horse, and a few belongings. Six children made the trip ages ranging from one year to 10 years.
The family arrived at their farm, three miles east of Olney on 14 October 1906 where they farmed their 160 acres of land. In 1917, the family purchased another 160 acres of land. The family moved into Olney, Texas in 1925 but continued to farm the land.
Mr. and Mrs. D.R. Willard lived at their ranch home 2-1/2 miles southeast of Olney all of their married lives. Both came to Young County as children with their parents in 1906. The couple were married at the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church near Olney on 22 August 1911 and then moved to the farm established by Willard's parents. Besides working with his parents to develop the farm property, Willard purchased the home place from his relatives and reared his family there.
Both are members of the Olney First Baptist Church, where he is a deacon and she is a Sunday school teacher. Their two sons are active lay Baptist preachers.
