Carl Erick Gunderson was born on February 9, 1900 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah to Jens Gundersen and Johanne Marie Hansen. His father died when he was 2 years old and he was raised by his step-father Nels H. Nelson. He was a farm boy in Mt. Pleasant and before 1920 the family moved to Granger, Utah where they farmed.
Sometime during the Great Depression he left Utah for a while and went to work in California. While in California he married a woman but was later divorced. He returned to Utah and went to work at Hill Air Force Base as a civilian employee. He worked there until his death in 1959.
Carl Gunderson married my mother a few days before I was born in 1955 so that I would have a name. I was treated as his little prince. A year and a half after I was born his daughter Johanne Marie Gunderson was born. He died three years later leaving a hole in my heart but giving me the greatest gift that I could ever be given; my name.
Fifty three years after his death I know who my real father was and have found my lost family, but I still carry the Gunderson name to honor him. My son was named for him and I tell young Carl the few things that I know about his namesake. I also tell him of the love that I feel for this man and the gratitude that is in my heart. I thank my Lord in Heaven for sending me to him.
