Juliette Gardner was the daughter of Christopher C Gardner and Orilla Darbee.

Juliette grew up in Cherry Creek, Chautauqua County, New York. She married John J Barnes, the son of Bartholomew Barnes, in Newstead, Erie County, New York on January 1, 1857. She met John through these relationships: John's father Bartholomew lived close to Solomon Cottrell. (John's brother Tracy married Mary Prudence, daughter of Solomon Cottrell). Solomon Cottrell married Prudence Gardner, the daughter of Sullivan Gardner, while they were living in Brookfield, Monroe County. Then Sullivan Gardner moved to Cherry Creek, Chautauqua County, and Solomon Cottrell moved to the Newstead, Erie, County area. Sullivan Gardner was the grandfather of Juliette through her father Christopher Gardner. Solomon Cottrell was the son of John Cottrell; both John Cottrell and Sullivan Gardner had moved to Brookfield, Munroe County, from Rhode Island. They may well have known each other in Rhode Island. Both had strong religious interests.

Juliette and John lived in Cherry Creek, Chautauqua County near her father. They had one child Willet Samuel in 1861. John died in 1867. Juliette remarried his brother Roswell Barnes on March 27, 1862 in Cherry Creek.

John and Juliette moved to Potter County, Pennsylvania. They lived in Allegany and Sweden Valley. They had two additional children, Edgar J and Albert, in addition to Willet who was with them.

John's brother William also lived in the county for a while around 1910 (1910 census).

After Julia died, Rosswell continued to live in Sweden. He died on Feb 28, 1910. His burial place is not known, but it may be in this cemetery, also.

Obtained from the Potter County Vitals: "Julia Barnes age 61y7m b Chautaugua d 27 Mar 1901 Sweden Valley bd Sweden Cem 29 Mar 1901". Is the Sweden Cemetery mentioned there the same as this cemetery Sweden Hill? This may not be the correct cemetery, but this memorial was created to invite further research and confirmation.
