Samuel was working for Pret Haywood in a camp near Iolo, Wisconsin in the winter of 1884. He went to Arkansas in the late 1880s to live and work. He was probably living in Washington County, Arkansas where his sister, Ida Jane (Brush) Wood, was living at about the same time. Ida later married Edwin C. Heacock and moved to Phoenix, Arizona where their second son, James Leonard, was born. Samuel moved back to Royalton, WI after the death of his mother, Mary Jane. He eventually purchased the family farm and married Nellie Shaw.

Samuel and Nellie were probably married c.a.1894. To their union were born four children-John Francis (August 13, 1895-August 22, 1954), Ida (June 13, 1898-August 2, 1898), Samuel (March 15, 1901-November 1967), and Harry (b. July 28, 1904).

Note-From Waupaca County Ledger, records... "The death of Ida Brush in Mukwa on August 3, 1898. She was born (same place) less than two months earlier, on June 13th. Cause of death: Spina bifida, hydrocephalic. Her parents were Samuel Brush and Nellie Thau. The infant Ida was buried in the Royalton Cemetery." Nellie Thau would be Nellie Shaw.
