Ferd supposedly added two years to his age and joined the military when he was 16. He served in the US Army from 14 Feb 1921 to 14 Feb 1927 as a PFC stationed at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and assigned to Battery C, Ninth Field Artillery.
He and Helen married in 1927 and lived in his home town of Cedar Falls, Iowa. There he worked alongside his brothers in his father's auto repair shop. About 1933 the family moved to Minneapolis where he operated a filling station for several years.
Ferd was previously married, likely in Iowa; his first wife was Ann; last name is unknown.
