After the death of his mother, young Fred was raised by his widowed grandmother Clarinda Case, on her farm in Eagle Point, Ogle County, Illinois. As a young man, he moved to Ackley, Iowa where his father John had settled and remarried. After Fred's 1898 marriage to Margaret Barger he lived at Chapin, Iowa, probably near his older, married sister, Daisy Schollian.

Obituary Waterloo (IA) Courier - Services for Fred F. (Mike) Michaels, 86, who died Saturday afternoon at the Woodlawn Convalescent Home in Waterloo, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Nelson Funeral Home. The Reverend Doyle Hansen, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery at Ackley.

Mr. Michaels formerly operated an auto repair service here until he retired in 1950. He was born in Polo, Ill., July 8, 1876. He married Margaret Barger Sept. 14, 1898, in Eldora. Survivors include two sons, George, Hudson, and Howard, Waterloo; one daughter, Mrs. Katherine Malkovich, Minneapolis, Minn., 11 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. He was preceded by his wife, three sons, one daughter and one grandchild.
