(May 29, 2001) The Herald Citizen, Cookeville, TN: ‘Way Back When’ section: Baxter resident J. C. Maynard told the Herald Citizen that he was alive today because he skipped breakfast one day. That’s because that day was Dec. 7, 1941, at Pearl Harbor. Most of the men who did go down to breakfast that morning died in the bombing by the Japanese.
Maynard went on to serve it the Philippines, Guam and Saipan, building runways and bunkers.

Funeral service for Mr. J. C. Maynard, 88 of the Boma Community of Putnam County will be held Wednesday March 31 at 1 p.m. in the Baxter Chapel of Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow in Tightfit Cemetery.
Mr. Maynard died Saturday afternoon, March 27, 2010 in Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Maynard was born July 28, 1921 in Putnam County to the late Larkin and Mandy Jernigan Maynard.
He was a U. S. Army Veteran of WWII and a survivor of the Pearl Harbor Attack.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Martin Maynard, sister, Linnie Bruce, brothers, Gilbert Maynard, Larkin Jr. Maynard, and E. C. “Bill” Maynard.
Survivors include three daughters & sonsinlaw, Cherl & Jeff Crouch of Cookeville, Vickie & Johnny Wright of Carlsbad, NM, Melinda & John Brewington of Cookeville, four sons & three daughtersinlaw J. Lynn & Teresa Maynard, Donald Maynard, Randy & Scerina Maynard all of Silver Point, Ronald & Sunae Maynard of Baxter, two sisters and brothersinlaw, Mabel Joyce & James Maddux of Baxter, Ruby &
Howard Ingram of Florida, mother of his children, Billie Richardson Maynard, thirteen grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
