James is the son of William Blanton Boyd and Catherine McClurkin. He married Elizabeth Curtis Parks and they are the parents of Jane Boyd Peden, William B Boyd, Sallie Boyd, Nancy Boyd, David Boyd, Isaac Preston Boyd, Elizabeth Boyd, Catherine Harris Boyd Pitts, James Foster Boyd and Margaret Boyd.
James owned considerable acreage and a grist mill on Boyd's Millpond. He died in an accident in his grist mill.
