George Parker Nelson was the second son of William and Cornelia Mandeville Hardman Nelson. He was born, 25 January 1817, at Peekskill-on-Hudson. He was baptized in the Presbyterian Church at Peekskill and he attended school at Upper Red Hook, in Dutchess county, and at the Peekskill
Academy. He graduated from Williams College in 1836. After that he studied law with his father for one year, and one year in the office of Henry B. Cowles. He was chosen as School Commissioner in New York City, and later Supervisor of Scarsdale. Mary Delavan Nelson, the only daughter of Richard Nelson, were married, on the 25 September 1845, by Rev. Dr. Hutton in the Reformed Dutch Church, New York City.

Mary Delavan died on 4 September 1865, in Scarsdale, New York, three days before the death of their newborn child.

He married his second wife, Mary E. Robinson, was the daughter of James E. and Laura Robinson. She died Sept. 20, 1899 at Jamesport, Long Island, New York.

George died Sept. 27, 1905 at home (NYC).
