James was born on a farm in Pella Township in Ford County, Illinois and made his home there until a few years before his death. Upon leaving the farm he came to Piper City to reside. Soon afterward he was made manager of the Piper City Telephone and Telegraph Company, which position he held until his death. He was a successful businessman and amassed consideral property, most of it being Illinois lands. In fraternal circles, also, he was quite prominent, being in the Masonic order a member of the Blue Lodge and the Eastern Star chapter of Piper City, the R. A. chapter at Gilman, the Commandery at Fairbury and the Shrine at Peoria. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. and M. W. A. orders.

He married Nellie Allen January 23, 1911. Together they had one child, daughter Harriet Louise, who was born a month after her father's death.

James passed away at the home of his brother in Kankakee, Kankakee, Illinois after an illness of several weeks. About three weeks before his death he went to a Chicago hospital for treatment and was thought to be improving. After a stay in the hospital of a couple of weeks he went to his brother's home intending to stay briefly, but he suffered a relapse and failed rapidly.

At the time of his death he left his wife, Nellie, and three brothers; Earl of Piper City, John of Kansas City, MO and Henry of Kankakee. He also left two sisters Nellie Stofferan of Oroville, WA and Nora Hanson of Kankakee.
