"Earl Stedman Dies in Pontiac Hospital

Earl Stedman, a resident of Cullom, died at the Pontiac Hospital on Wednesday afternoon of last week.

His age was 61 years, 2 months and 6 days. He had been a resident of Cullom for 10 years and prior to that most of his life was spent in and near Piper City. He followed his trade as a painter and paper hanger at Cullom for several years and until recently, when he sold out, had conducted a restaurant in Cullom.

He was born in the State of New York on October 18, 1862. His father followed the vocation of trapping for several years, moving with his family to Illinois in 1864, and settling in La Salle county. Earl was but two years of age at this time, so he lived practically his entire life in this state.

At the age of ten his parents moved to Ford county, the elder Stedman purchasing 240 acres of land in what is known as "the Panhandle." The Stedmans were early pioneers of that section.

Earl made his home with his parents until his marriage on May 21, 1889, to Josephine Fortier. They resided on a farm near Piper City for three years, then moving into the village where he was engaged in various lines of business, including a general store, a hotel and serving as rural mail carrier. They made their home in Piper City for twenty-three years, then moving to Kankakee, where they lived two years. In 1914 they moved to Cullom, where they have since resided.

Mr. Stedman was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, republican in politics, a member of the A.F. and A.M., I.O.O.F. and M.W.A. lodges.

He leaves, besides his wife, five children - Lurline, Mrs. Joe Leiser, of Cullom; John of Cullom; Branche, Mrs. Fred Koestner, of Piper City; Gertrude, Mrs. H. L. Askins, of Chicago; Mary, Mrs. H. Dewey Faust, of Los Angeles, Calif. There are also two sisters - Mrs. Tom Sanders, of Jacksonville, Ill., and Mrs. Lou Stoffern, of Cashmere, Washington, and one brother, Henry, of Gilman.

Funeral services were held from the Cullom M.E. church Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Burial was at Piper City. Services at the grave were in charge of the Piper City Odd Fellows."
