Obituary, From Piper City Journal:

Nelson Stedman Dead

Was a Pioneer and Highly Respected Citizen of Pella Township

Through an oversight last week we failed to chronicle the death of Nelson Stedman, which occurred at his home in Pella on Friday evening, Dec 26, 1902. His sudden demise was entirely unexpected, and while he had been ailing and had called in a physician, yet only a short time before his death Mr. Stedman had telephoned in that he was feeling better and was getting along all right. Soon afterward he grew worse and in a few minutes was dead.

Such, in brief, are the facts concerning the passing from among us of one of the sturdy pioneer characters whom we all hold in reverence. Mr. Stedman had been a resident of Pella township since 1870. He was born in New York in May, 1833, and there he spent his youth and early manhood. In 1863 he was married to Miss Harriet Reed in Chautauqua county, New York, soon afterward coming to Illinois. Here he has since lived, labored and prospered.

Sixty-nine years, as life is counted, is a long time, and every year that Nelson Stedman lived was a year of industry, of rugged honesty and of fidelity to his friends. No one spoke harm of him. His was a heart that was good and noble, and to his children he has left the legacy of a good name, more precious than gold.

One by one the old pioneers are being gathered unto their fathers. They have lived to see the wilderness and the bleak prairies of this county converted into homes, their children honored and respected, and the country made to bloom and blossom as the rose.

Funeral services for Mr. Stedman were held at the family residence Monday, Dec 29, at 10 o'clock in the forenoon, and were attended by a large number of sorrowing friends, relatives and neighbors. Rev. O.A.H. De la Gardie conducted the services, after which interment took place in Brenton cemetery. We extend to the bereaved family and friends our condolence in their affliction, and at the same time are constrained to say that with Uncle Nelson "all is well."
