Biography

Adeline (Addie) Beach was born on April 6, 1857, in Boone County, Indiana. At the time of her birth, her father, Caleb, was 43 years old, and her mother, Mariah, was 37.

In the 1860 Census she was living with her family in Washington Township, Boone County, Indiana and she was three years old. Ten years later, not much had changed according to the 1870 Census.

On October 2, 1876, Addie and William Brookie completed their marriage registration. They were joined in marriage three days later on October 5, 1876, in Boone County, Indiana. Addie was 19 years old at the time.

The first daughter born to this union was Pearl Grace Brookie. She was born on June 18, 1877, most likely in Clinton County, Indiana, when Addie was 20 years old. It's not hard to imagine the excitement this young couple must have felt as they welcomed their baby girl.

A second daughter, Lottie, was born on April 2, 1879, just four days shy of Addie's 22nd birthday.

The joy of this birth and the Brookie's happy life was short lived. Tuberculosis invaded their home. It states in Addie's obituary that she had suffered for months. This leaves one to believe that she was not given much time to thoroughly enjoy her newborn. It's unclear how long her new infant suffered with the illness, but six-month-old Lottie was the first to lose her battle.

Three months later, Addie died as a young mother on January 22, 1880, in Frankfort, Indiana. She was just 22 years old.

Tragically for Pearl, their only surviving daughter, William would lose his life one month after Addie.

Because Pearl survived such a highly contagious disease, it makes one wonder if Addie and William had the good sense to send her to a relative to stay during this time. One thing that is known is that, in March of 1880, guardianship of Pearl Brookie was given to Clarkson H. Beach, Addie's brother, and his wife.

This young mother, her husband and baby are buried together in Buntin Cemetery in Frankfort, Clinton County, Indiana. It is an honor to present Addie's story.
