Martha, who lost her mother in 1854, was brought by her father (with her brothers and sisters) to California in 1857 by sailboat and pack train across the Isthmus of Panama, Family lore says that when the sailboat was entering the Golden Gate, rough seas threw 8-year-old Martha to the deck and nearly rolled her overboard; she was saved by an alert passenger.
Martha grew up in Sonoma County where her father farmed. She met Henry Andrew Hardin and married him 18 November 1869. Henry predeceased her 8 September 1920 after nearly 51 years of marriage and is buried alongside Martha. Martha was 96 at time of death.
