Mary Veale was the first child of William Veale and Margaret Wells, born in Missouri when it was a new state. Her mother was from a pioneer family with links to several other early American frontier families including the Kerrs. Her father was one of a family of orphaned children who had been brought from Cornwall in 1820 only to lose their parents to disease and be raised by a court-appointed guardian and estate trustee. Mary's parents lived in Pike County, Missouri, then in Pike County, Illinois, across the Mississippi. After having 10 children, Margaret Wells died in 1854, the same year Mary wed Josiah Heath Benson. Her father and the younger children all traveled to California in 1857 by ship, settling in Sonoma County near Petaluma, near where Mary and Josiah later settled after some years spent in Appanoose County on the southern edge of Iowa, where their first four children were born.
