Born Temperance Frances Cornish Veale in El Dara, Pike County, Illinois, the daughter of William Veale and Margaret Wells. Like several other Veales in different generations, she was given the name Temperance in honor of Temperance Rowe Veale, William's mother, who after immigrating from Cornwall had, with her husband, died in 1820, leaving four orphaned children in the New World. Frances Cornish was Grandma Temperance's own mother's maiden name.

Frances' first husband was Henry Tupper. Her second husband was Benjamin Franklin DeHaven. Four children: Caroline, William, Emma, and Clara.
