Seven-year-old Jimmy Baugh [Elwood Ball] got up and walked across the floor at Wesley Hospital here Tuesday and declared: "It don't hurt a bit now." For 10 hours Jimmy [Elwood] had been in pain with a needle penetrating his heart. The needle, one and one half inches long, was removed by Dr. V. H. Musick and Harper Wright, partners in charge of the South Oklahoma City clinic. "It was a 50-50 chance," Dr. Musick said after the operation, 'for if we had not been successful immediately, the boy would have died."
Injured at Play: Jimmy {Elwood] is the son of E. M. Baugh [BALL], Britton, carpenter. With four brothers and sisters, he was playing in the back yard of his home late Monday with an improvised scoter made by their father. [only Glen at home]. Jimmy [Elwood] spied a needle. He picked it up and pinned it into his shirt on the left side. "I'll save this for mama," his father quoted him as saying as he resumed his frolic among the sawhorses in the backyard workshop. Suddenly the youth screamed. He had fallen on his face. Rushing to his side, the father noticed the needle had disappeared. The fall had driven the steel splinter into the boy's side.

Ball was in the Army Air Corp at Walker Air Force Base, Roswell. Mrs. Ball was living in Artesia with her parents. After World War II, Ball continued his career in the Air Force and retired Aug. 1, 1962. He remained semi-retired working at various jobs until retirement in March 1975. Mr. and Mrs. Ball celebrated their 50th anniversary with a trip to Honolulu prior to a celebration with their three children and daughter-in-law: David E. Ball and wife Paulette, of Blanco; Carol R. Musgrove of Farmington; Larry P {should be D.} Ball of Albuquerque; and eight grandchildren.
