First person in Oklahoma to have open heart surgery and such a delicate operation as a needle removed from the heart at Wesley Hospital, Oklahoma City. Age 7 yrs.-9 mos., 10-15-1929, found a needle on back porch and put in his overalls pocket to give to his mom later, not home at the time. Than went outside and started playing with friends on some wood in the back yard and fell, the needle was pushed through the skin and through he pull out what he thought was all, was only half with other half punching the heart muscles. Then as today, had his dad's sense of humor and made it through the operation and recovery just fine. Has a great sense of humor and loves to tease.
HEART OF BOY HERE: "It Don't Hurt Now" - OPERATION IS PERFORMED AFTER FALL!
Child, 7, Walks Soon After Needle Is Removed - HURT WHILE AT PLAY: Delicate Organ Is Penetrated When Lad Falls on Home Made Scooter [playing on wood]. Seven-year-old Jimmy Baugh [Elwood Ball] got up and walked across the floor at Wesley Hospital here Tuesday and declared: "It don't hurt a bit now." For 10 hours Jimmy [Elwood] had been in pain with a needle penetrating his heart. The needle, one and one half inches long, was removed by Dr. V. H. Musick and Harper Wright, partners in charge of the South Oklahoma City clinic. "It was a 50-50 chance," Dr. Musick said after the operation, 'for if we had not been successful immediately, the boy would have died."
Injured at Play: Jimmy {Elwood] is the son of E. M. Baugh [BALL], Britton, carpenter. With four brothers and sisters, he was playing in the back yard of his home late Monday with an improvised scoter made by their father. [only Glen at home]. Jimmy [Elwood] spied a needle. He picked it up and pinned it into his shirt on the left side. "I'll save this for mama," his father quoted him as saying as he resumed his frolic among the sawhorses in the backyard workshop. Suddenly the youth screamed. He had fallen on his face. Rushing to his side, the father noticed the needle had disappeared. The fall had driven the steel splinter into the boy's side.
Buried in Flesh: Not even the eye was visible. The father's diagnosis was verified by Dr. Musick when the boy was taken to the south side clinic. An operation was seen as the only chance. Only a local anesthetic was given and the needle removed with little probing. Earlier Dr. Musick said the quivering flesh indicated the heart was scraping the needle point, which would soon result in infection or stopping of the heart. It was found the outer wall was punctured. Jimmy [Elwood] was sleeping late Tuesday and probably will recover rapidly, doctors said.
Needle Gone, Boy Better: When Elwood Ball, 7 years old, fell from his hand-made scooter and drove a needle nearly to his heart, it looked as if the little fellow had made his last scooter trip Tuesday. But Dr. V. H. Musick of the South Oklahoma City clinic extracted the needle at Wesley Hospital and by nightfall Elwood was feeling nearly himself again. Elwood, son of E.M. Ball, Britton, was riding his scooter. Boy-like, he had pinned up a tear in his shirt with a needle about an inch and a half long. When he fell on his face the blow drove the steel splinter into his chest, with the point penetrating the outer muscles of the heart, Doctor Musick said. The needle was extracted by aid of a local anesthetic.
