Civil War Medal of Honor recipient for service during the Civil War. Served in Company C, 61st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, enlisting as a Private in Pittsburgh on August 1,1861. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the final Union Army assaults on Petersburg, Virginia on April 2, 1865. His citation reads "Capture of the flag of the Tennessee Brigade (C.S.A.)". He was promoted to corporal for his deed. His Medal was awarded to him on May 10, 1865. He was one of eight 61st Pennsylvania Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being 1st Lieutenant Charles H. Clausen, Corporal Joseph Fisher, Corporal John C. Matthews, Private Milton Matthews, Captain George W. Mindil, Major Robert L. Orr, and Sergeant Sylvester D. Rhodes).

The tombstone states 1835, but his actual birth year was 1844. This can be attested in the 1850 and 1860 US Census records of his family in Tarentum, PA.
