George enlisted for Civil War army service in the Pennsylvania Light Artillery, November 7, 1861. He was assigned to Independent Battery F. He was mustered out November 7, 1864. Rank: Private. Returning to Alleghney, County, Pennsylvania after his discharge he and Ellen had four children: Leanora (1860-1918), who married William Kingsmill (1859-1919); George, born 1867; Elizabeth, born 1869; and Ida; born 1870. Between 1871 and 1875, George and Ellen moved to Cleveland, Ohio where four more children were born: Harry W. (1875-1932 in Cleveland); Adeline, (1877-1959, Clark County, Ohio, married Frederick Kachel); Theodore, born 1880 and Harlow (1882-1939 in Cleveland, Ohio). He applied for an invalid soldiers' pension, September 27, 1890 which was issued as Certificate #932944 in Ohio.

Mitchell, 304 Grand Ave., Cleveland, Ohio but for next of kin he gave the name of his brother, Theodore, who resided at Belmont and Orange Streets in Cleveland. At the time of his death from "exhaustion" his address was listed as 2889 E. 81st Street, Cleveland. He was buried in the Veterans' Plot in Section 72 at Woodland Cemetery, April 18, 1908.
