Our community was very much shocked and surprised Sunday morning to learn of the sudden death of J. M. Best, one of our old settlers and highly respected citizens. He was about town as usual Saturday evening and as was his custom, arose Sunday morning just before 7 o'clock, built the fires and went back to bed, apparently in his usual good health. After returning to bed he coughed once or twice and before the family hardly realized it, he was dead. Although the doctor was there within three minutes after they discovered he was ill, yet he was too late. John M. Best was born in St. Lawrence county, N.Y., Feb. 14, 1835, so was sixty three years, nine months and fifteen days old. About 1857, he came to Leavenworth, and then in 1864 he married Miss Melissa Gibson. He lived there in Brown and Jackson counties about nineteen years, and in 1876 moved to this county and had been living in town for several years. When about nineteen years old he joined the M.E. church and during all his life had been a consistent and faithful member thereof. He was an honest, upright and truly good Christian man and was most highly respected and esteemed by a large circle of friends and neighbors. He leaves a wife, three sons, two of whom, Walter and John, live here and George in Colorado, a daughter, Mrs. Uriah Hiner, north of town, and two brothers, one in New York and one at Clifton, Kan. The latter, W. A. (sic) Best, and his nephew were here at the funeral. The last services were held Tuesday at the M.E. church, a large number being present and Rev. Bernhard officiating. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. Everyone mingled their sorrow and tears with the stricken relatives, who have lost a kind husband and father. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to them all.
