Bethel, who was called "Bess" by her family, was born in Whitfield County, Georgia, to William Marion Babb and his first wife, Susan Caldonia "Callie" Loner Babb, on September 1, 1893. Bess was one of 10 children born to Will and Callie, and she also had 10 half-siblings, as her father remarried after her mother's death.
As a young woman, Bess went out to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, to visit her older sister, Mary, who was married to Tom Hix. While there, Bess met and married Al Turner.
Bess also taught school.
Al and Bess ran a ranch, but sold the ranch in 1935 to work their sawmill full time. Their sawmill was helpful to several younger relatives, including Bess's nephew, Carlton Babb of Dalton, GA, as it provided employment for quite a few of them during the depression years.
Their original ranch house, built in the 1920's near Steamboat Springs, still stands and has been remodeled into a vacation cabin by its current owners, The Midnight Ranch, for year-round leasing by families and groups. I have posted a photo of the "Pine Lodge House," as the Turners' ranch house is now known, in the photo section to the right.
In later life, Al and Bess moved to Tucson, Arizona.
A special thank you to JOHN BROOKS for his trip to the cemetery to take the great photos of Bess's marker!
