MARRIAGE -
From the Vermilion Co Marriage Books -
Strader, Lewis - Millaway, Abaline - E. Hunt OR Hurst, step-father gave permission - 17 Mar 1839

[NOTE ~ The name of Abaline's 'step-father' may have been ELI HEWITT/HUITT/HUIT. ]

From the book "The Goodner Family: A Genealogical History" by Hubert Wesley Lacey, 1960 (available on ancestry.com):
On page 41
5d. Margaret Goodner b. 1810/20, in either Kentucky or Preble Co. Ohio. m. Mr. Hewitt. No record of marriage is on file in either Preble County or Vermilion Co Ill. as Margaret. They have one of her children with Hewitt listed as: 'Abline Hewitt' who married Mr. Strader - the 3 children they have listed for her are the known children of Abaline and Lewis Strader. The other children he has listed for Margaret are David Hewitt, Lillie (m. Mr. Barr); Olive (m. Mr. Ashby).

The book has some mistakes with relationships. David Hewitt was born 1827. His DAUGHTERS were Lillie and Olive not his siblings. His memorial is #24208458. The 1850 Census shows David with his father, Eli Hewitt and 2nd Wife, Mary Prather. David was 23 years old, born six years prior to the marriage of Eli and Prather.

According to the Goodner book, Margaret had a sister, Rebecca, for whom there IS a marriage record in Preble Co Ohio to Eli Huit (Hewitt) on 28 Sep 1826 but they had no further information about her death or children. I believe that Rebecca and Margaret are the same person.

My speculation is that Margaret (or Rebecca) had a previous marriage to a Millaway about 1822/1823. She had at least one child with Millaway: Abaline, born 1824. Millaway died and she then married Eli Hewitt on 28 Sep 1826 and is the mother of David Hewitt b. 1827. Margaret/Rebecca died 1827-1833 and Eli remarried to Mary Ann Prather on 10 March 1833. Abaline Millaway married in 1839 explaining why the 'step-father' (E. Huit) had to give permission for her marriage to Lewis Strader. Abaline was only 15 yrs old.

The Goodners, Straders, and Millaways (as well as others) moved in groups together from Guilford Co NC to Preble Co Ohio to Vermilion Co Illinois and intermarried. One of Lewis Strader's siblings also married a Goodner, brother of Margaret/Rebecca.

Abaline's Goodner grandparents are buried in this cemetery also. (Walter and Susannah Swisher Goodner)

NOTE - Kathy Dougherty contacted me when she found notes in her grandfather's things that might shed some light on Abaline's name.
One note says: "Children of Abaline Goodner Millaway (heir of Walter Goodner) who married Lewis Strader March 17th, 1839" - then lists the children.

Please contact me if anyone can shed some light on who Abaline Millaway Strader's father might be.
