Stephen was born in Virginia coming of age in Greene County Tennessee on the border with North Carolina. He was married to 3 ladies, during his life, including Nancy Hale 10/31/1826; Mary Ellen "Polly" Etter 8/31/1830; both in Greene County Tennessee.

He was active in the Sinking Springs Lutheran Church near Midway, Greene County, Tennessee. His children born in Tennessee were baptized at this church. In 1834 a group, of German Lutheran's from this church moved to Boone County, Indiana. Establishing a church and community (Whitestown) in Union Township. After moving to Boone County, Indiana, he married Ann Martha Lucas 12/2/1847.

He had at least two children with Nancy, William and Anna; he had at least 6 children with Polly, John, Caroline, Andrew, Louisa, Malvina and Amanda; he had at least 6 children with Ann Martha, Sarah Emeline, Phillip M, Martha, James Nelson, Thomas J, Francis, and Stephen Riley.

Sarah, Phillip and Martha were born in Indiana probably Boone County, James was born in Franklin County, Indiana, Thomas, Francis and Stephen R were born in Grundy County Iowa. They then moved to Benton County Iowa.

William, Amanda, and Stephen Riley settled in Kansas. Sarah settled in Minnesota. Other children settled in Boone County Indiana and Benton County and Blackhawk County, Iowa.
