She was born in Ankara, Turkey and baptized the following day. She was married in a love match to a man whose name is not known and they had a son. Her husband was drafted to fight in the army and was killed. Marie's child died soon after. Around this time her father died and the family lost everything. To survive she traveled to Constantinople where she spent the next years working as a dressmaker for a Turkish family. She was joined in the city by her mother and siblings, who either went with her at the time or followed soon after when the Armenians of the town were largely deported or killed in the Armenian Genocide of 1915. In 1921 Marie's sister Louisa was arranged to marry an Armenian man in Philadelphia, and a year later Marie went there as well to marry his twin brother Rouben Kashishian. He sent Marie a first class ticket on the S. S. Constantinople, however Marie's mother encouraged her to trade it in for two steerage tickets in order to bring the family's youngest daughter Tacouhi with her. Marie and Tacouhi arrived at Ellis Island on August 2, 1922, and were detained two days before being released into the United States. Marie and Roupen were married on August 7. They had a daughter Martha and a son Peter. After Rouben died in 1966 Marie moved to California to live with her daughter's family.
