Matilda A Davis

Not only the community of Brant but friends and acquaintances throughout the entire county were deeply grieved by the report of the sudden death of Mrs. John Davis, which occurred at her home in the afternoon of Tuesday, Jan. 24, 1911, without a moments warning, while she was busy with her household work. Mrs. Davis was in the best of health up to the moment of her death.

Her son and daughter were absent that afternoon visiting their sister, Mrs. John Graf. At the time of their mother's death she was preparing to do some baking. Her husband was with her all the afternoon except for a short time that he was at the barn. He returned to the house and was busy filling his pipe when he heard an unusual sound and turning saw that his wife had fallen to the floor. He went to her and calling her name, tried to arouse her, failing in which he picked her up and laid her on the couch but she was beyond earthly help, having died instantly. Her son and daughter returned just at that time and the grief of the stricken family cannot be described.

Matilda A. Mortimer was born in Bass, England, March 3, 1844 and was a daughter of the late Emanuel and Jemima Mortimer, pioneer settlers of the town of Chilton. She came to this country with her parents in 1846. They remained in New York State one year and then come to Wisconsin locating in Lowell, Dodge county, where they remained until 1854 when they moved to the Town of Chilton, this county. On April 16, 1863 she was married to John Davis and moved onto the farm on which she lived until death came.

Her neighbors and friends among whom she resided for so many years respected her highly and are a unit in regarding her as one of the noblest types of motherhood and womanhood.

She was the mother of six children, three sons and three daughters, five of whom with her husband survive her, Frank, Evan, John, Ellen and Mrs. John Graf. She is also survived by three brothers, Allen, George and Albert Mortimer and one sister, Mrs. Harvey N. Yule.

The funeral took place this Friday with services at the Brant M.E. Church.
