On Friday, June 2nd, at her home in North Stockbridge, Mrs. Lucy Buxton, one of our most sincerely loved and respected citizens, passes away, aged 76 years, 2 months and 5 days. Lucy Scofield was born at Essex. Cittenden County, Vermont, march 27, 1840. While still young she came to Wisconsin with her father’s family settling in the town of Forest, Fond du Lac County. On Nov. 17, 1857, she was united in marriage to Ranildo A. Buxton and to this union ten children were born. In 1864 they came to Stockbridge and located in the northern portion of the town where they followed farming. Both she and her husband were highly educated, the latter in the early days writing many interesting articles both in prose and poetry for The Times.
Their home life was ideal and those who have visited at the Buxton home never tire of telling of the generous hospitality showered on them by this good woman. In her childhood she became interested in Christianity and was always a devout christian woman. In 1877 she joined the M. E. church at Stockbridge by letter and at the time of her death was the oldest member of that church. Her life was truly a Christian one and her devotion to her family was only such as a true mother could give. She was interested in their advancement and her aim was to see then grown to be useful members of society.
After the death of her husband which occurred some years ago, she superintended the home work and educated her children. Among her neighbors and friends she was recognized for her true worth, and her passing will leave a vacancy in the community of which she has been a factor for many years.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. George L. Pettis of Menasha, Mrs. John W. Birkett of Winnebago, Ill., and seven sons, Edwin A. of Vinton, Iowa, George L. of Kirkland, Ill., Albert J. of Racine, Charles W., of Wittenberg, Herbert E. of Chicago, Richard A. of Appleton and Cecil R. of Stockbridge, all of whom mourn the loss of a truly good mother.
The funeral which was held on Monday was largely attended by relatives and friends.
