Samuel D. Rothrock was the youngest of five known children of John Rothrock (1800-1870) and Hannah Demuth (1807-1885), who married c1827 in presumably Pennsylvania. It is not known where Samuel is buried, but it is believed he died at Carroll County, Virginia like Hannah did.

Samuel married Mary Tyson in c1875 in presumably Virginia. Samuel and Mary were the parents of three known children, namely:

1. Hannah Elizabeth Rothrock Kendall (1877-1896)
2. Annie Rothrock Denney (1879-p1921)
3. Mary Lucy Rothrock Denney (1883-1952)

In 1880 the parents, the first two children and and Samuel's widowed mother Hannah were living at Carroll County, Fancy Gap District, Virginia with Samuel listed as a farmer. However it is known that Samuel was also a minister. It is believed the family moved to Douglas County, Missouri in c1893/94. In 1900 Samuel, Mary (mother of three, two living) and daughter Lucy were living at Clay Township, Douglas County, Missouri along with Samuel's brother Owen. In 1910 Samuel was living at Sumner County, Kansas, with his daughter Lucy and her husband, John B. Denney. In 1920 Samuel was still living with his daughter Lucy, but at Independence, Montgomery County, Kansas.
