Joshua was the son of Samuel Sprinkle & Mary Larkins.

The Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio (Vol XI, 1891) shows that Joshua was an unassigned recruit in the 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. These records also indicate that he died 26 Apr 1864 and was a private.

Joshua's military records, filed at the National Archives, show that he was a member of Company A, 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. He enlisted 5 Feb 1864 at Staunton, Ohio. At the time of his enlistment, he was 20 years old, 5'-10" tall, with dark hair, gray eyes and dark complexion. His occupation is given as farmer. The records show he died at the Camp Chase Hospital (Columbus, Ohio) and give both the March and April dates (the March date is probably correct). He died of pneumonia and erysipelas (the latter is some sort of strep infection).
