Howard L. Shaffer

HANOVER – Howard L. Shaffer, 87, of Hanover, died 4 a.m. Tuesday at his home. He was the husband of the late Lovie S. (Zumbrum) Shaffer, who died December 16.
The service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Zion Shaffer's United Lutheran Church, Shaffer Road, Seven Valleys. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover. Viewings will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Geiple Funeral Home Inc., 53 Main St., Glen Rock, and 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Friday at the church.
Mr. Shaffer was born July 25, 1914, in Codorus Township. He was the son of the late Max and Elda (Brenneman) Shaffer.
He was a plant services person at P.H. Glatfelter Co., in Spring Grove, retiring in 1979 after 15 years of service; prior to that, he was a truck driver for Ehrhart Conrad Wholesale Food in Hanover and W.L. Sterner Farm Equipment in Hanover; and also farmed in Codorus and Manheim townships for several years. Following retirement, he was a driver for Roy Bream Jr. Motors in Hanover. He was a member of Zion Shaffer's United Lutheran Church, where he was a deacon emeritus, trustee, taught Sunday school for several years and had served on the council; he was the first deacon to serve the Jefferson Parish, serving from 1978 until 1994. He was a former director on the board of the Shrewsbury Lutheran Home.
Mr. Shaffer is survived by two daughters, Marie E. Whisler of Hanover and Lola M. Boose of Spring Grove; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary S. Hersh and Pauline V. Werner, both of Hanover.
Officiating at the service will be his pastor, the Rev. J. Thomas Shelley, assisted by Bishop Emeritus Guy S. Edmiston Jr., former Bishop of the Lower Susquehanna Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.
