Thomas was the son of Rev. Thomas Springer Bronston Sr 1791–1869, who was born in PA, and his wife Lucy Ann Clark 1792–1846 of Richmond.

He was married 9 Jun 1852 to Mattie Voralis McCreary, sister of Gov James Bennett McCreary, who was twice Governor of Kentucky, in non-consecutive terms.

Tom and Mattie had no children.

Outside the bonds of matrimony, Tom had 2 daughters with his mistress Maria Lakes:
~ Emma Lakes (1876–1919)
~ Tommie Lakes (1879–1912)

Earlier, Tom may have had a son with Maria's sister, Martha SUSAN Lakes:
~ Thomas BRONSTON Lakes (1875–1949)

After Tom's wife Mattie left her estate to her family and nothing to her husband, he left his 380 acre farm to his daughters, Emma and Tommie.

The Bronston family contested the bequest, but the farm went to the daughters. The 1908 suit stated "...Bronston, for more than 30 years before his death, sustained immoral relations with Maria Lakes, the mother of...Emma House and Tommie Osborn...the children of T. C. Bronston, and were so recognized by him"
